A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds much more quickly than those who halt conventional lifestyle programs.
Research printed in a major medical journal shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such medications must be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting weight within about a year and a half.
Comparing Treatments
The study, which examined dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a less rapid creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the accelerated rebound.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Disease?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "highlight the chronic nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of cravings.
"It was like a trigger flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," said a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not established permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Adoption
Figures show that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts stress that while these medications are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing behavioural management.
