Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Group

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with extensive world-building, a colorful mix of characters, and a thrilling plot including angels, evil spirits, and malevolent powers growing in influence within the city.

Warning: Key plot points for Episode 3 of the new season are included.

The Warrior Group Unveiled

The third episode ended with a dramatic pause and revealed the first table of heroes who will split off from the central cast to undertake their separate journey, separate from the additional parties.

This warrior group consists of the determined fighter (played by the voice actor), the agile character (the talented performer), the fierce warrior (Whitney Moore), Wicander (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Considering a large ensemble, it was evident from the beginning that keeping everyone at a single group would be unworkable.

Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, connecting the characters’ stories before branching into three separate parties: Soldiers, Schemers, and Seekers.

Characteristics of the Soldiers Table

As described by the DM, the Soldiers table is for adventurers who enjoy a typically action-packed battle-oriented narrative style where diplomatic options are scarce.

Upon first impression, figures such as the hesitant healer Wicander Halovar might seem mismatched, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are ideally matched for the warrior group.

Motivations for Departure

To begin with, the party understands precisely where to head next after a brutal opening clash with the antagonists.

Casimir of the deceased character—whose demise started the story’s plot—manipulated The Crow Keepers for his personal gain, invading Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting the rogue, and swiping all the powerful objects to auction.

The traitor then settled his liabilities and escaped to a Halovar stronghouse in the northern region, beyond the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire pursuing him.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each character has a specific drive to depart the urban setting:

  • The rogue, as Thjazi’s partner and best friend, desires vengeance.
  • The knowledgeable figure has experience in Timmony and cautions that it is a hostile place.
  • The strong character and Wicander, having defied his family’s wishes to kill Teor and instead freed him, have no other options.
  • However, their position as prominent individuals in the powerful family could assist the party enter areas they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter pledged a eternal obligation to Wicander for his salvation and will now go with him wherever.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are sought by the powers that govern Dol-Makjar for a variety of reasons, making remaining behind no longer safe:

  • The agile adventurer and The character are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The strong figure and The cleric betrayed the powerful family and the army of fiends they are partnered with.
  • The fighter is wanted dead by the clan.

This means them little choice but to head to Timmony in search of Casimir.

Upcoming Developments

From episode three’s Cooldown, we find out that the warrior group won’t be around next week, leaving the remaining eight participants to form the Questers and Strategists groups.

Viewers can look forward to learning which players will be where in the season’s last Overture episode, available to watch on October 24.
